What
could be more interesting than sailing the Greek islands during Orthodox Easter.
The islands come alive as spring begins and Greek Easter heralds the opening
of the summer season.
Easter in the Islands is a different affair. Religious ceremonies are conducted
in all the villages. Street parades, the blessing of the fishing fleets, and
village square feasts are some of the traditional events that you will find
in the islands.
We begin our trip with leaving athens and sailing to the town of Epidavouros.
The main church is perched on a hill over the harbour. The bells will ring on
Good Friday and street processions with Icons of the virgin Mary are carried
around the village waiting for the Priests to bless them
The following day we proceed to the Island of Poros. A cosmopolitan Island separated
from the main land by a small isthmus of a lake. On the mainland is the town
of Galatas, it is the base for fisherman that work from Poros. The day after
Good Friday they will be getting their fishing boats ready for the Holy Blessing
on Easter Sunday.
The island of Hydra is a hot spot to be over Easter, here the village celebrates
in grand fashion, with fleet blessings town parades, music in the town square,
food feasts and everyone cooks the lamb or goat on a spit.
From Hydra we proceed to Ermioni a small village that is the center for the
St.Nicholas monks. Ask your captain to tell you the story of these monk and
why they build their monasteries on the top's of mountains!!
On this cruise you will get the chance to experience a different style Easter.
Here it is as, if not more important than Christmas. The variety of different
foods that are uniquely available only during Easter could make this a gourmets
dream. The weather is mild and warm and the country side is lush and green.
A perfect time to see Greece.
